Maga Bo from Brazil graces the globesonic world with a new mixtape called Outras Terras, assembling unreleased material, own remixes and material from his globetrotting friends. Via his blog Kolleidosonic.
Playlist of Outras Terras Mixtape with indepth explanation of track origins below.
1. “Ê Boi (Maga Bo Remix)” Coco Raízes de Arcoverde (Unreleased)
Traditional coco meets dancehall. An unlabeled mp3 that I fell in love with – “…Eu vou morar em outras terras.”
2. “E Daí feat. Speed Freaks” Sonar Calibrado (Maga Bo and Filastine) (12″ Shockout)
Dancehall made with the samples of car alarms, cut up saharan blues guitar and the stream of conscious rhymes of the Niteroiense rapper, Speed Freaks.
3. “B’tallah (Maga Bo Remix)” Filastine (12″ Post World Industries – forthcoming)
Trilingual rhymes by Barcelona-based Algerian rapper Rabah (of MBS) float over ragga with trills of breakcore and cell phone speaker interference.
Yes! I found a new mix, something really innovative, with lots of stuff I don’t know sh**t about. Wanklerotaryengine, the head behind this mix, from Australia is part of the collective Croaking Lizard in Melbourne and has a broad background of breakcore, jungle, drum n bass and that sort of stuff. It somehow seems that people on Australia are quite open for different styles and furthermore dare to put them together. The “Enigney Ratorel’k Naw – Bludwize” mix features some rawwwwwww breakcore in the middle and combines everything from jungle, dubstep, dancehall, outernational bass stuff to bollywood crash. In short, a really heavy trip around the underground music world. Furthermore, someone who combines Filastine, Maga Bo, Mochipet, Bong Ra and Istari Lasterfahrer is just very worth to present.
Timeblind from /ruptures Soot imprint (among others, such as Shockout and The Agriculture), supposedly living in Berlin right now, just layed down a perfectly trippin’ Dubstep Mix. Mahout means the long-term companian and caretaker of an elephant in India (where he went travelling) and well, now it’s the name of a Mixsession for big mad urban Euro cities as well!
Browsing through my CD’s I just came across Bnegao from Rio, who recently toured with Maga Bo as MC. Formerly he was singer of the hip hop rock band Planet Hemp, which was founded in 1993.
“PlanetHemp began attracting attention because their shows always ended up in big fights and confusion. In 1994 B Negão joined the group, they signed up to Sony Music and put out the disc Usuário, which shed light over the band and produced a number of hits, like Mantenha o Respeito and the polemic Porcos Fardados (or Pigs in Uniforms), criticizing police brutality. It went Gold. Planet Hemp has played along with big hip hop names, like Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill. The follow-up, Os Cães Ladram Mas a Caravana Não Pára, was made by the end of 1996 and went Platinum. Due to their engagement with legalization and their explicit lyrics, Planet Hemp has suffered a lot of legal distress. Seized albums, cancelled gigs and arrests are still part of the band’s routine.” (source www.cliquemusic.com)
Lateron Bnegao teamed up with his own band Os Selectores de Frequencia and toured Spain 2004. One song from their last album is like a freaky hybrid of hardcore rock and Baile Funk, which I think is a must for those of you collecting all this cheesy bad lyric Baile Funk from nowadays. Take a leap back in time, when Funky Carioca was just swapping over to Europe. And get a full version of the Funky Carioca History here!
Hey, I just discovered Fftang Fftang on Mixcloud and afterwards came across them on Generation Bass again! They just dropped a cool mixtape with afro, cumbia, bhangra beats which you can download here. (Playlist is here)
And btw, why do those guys drop a mix? Because they’re clever and promote their new party in London on 93 Feet East in Bricklane this way. Check them out, if you happen to be around!
Maga Bo, the sonic traveller from Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, just came for a visit to Berlin to play at Club Transmediale, the digital media culture festival. His set was a fluent mix of Brazilian tunes, Baile Funk, Dubstep and Elektronic bits n pieces, all supoorted by his rapper MC Bnegao. Just before his great set I had the chance to do an interview and get some more insight about his travels, music and the “Funk Mundial” night in Berlin.
Soundlandscapes. Worldwide Migration. Unknown artists. Street credibility. Maga Bo. Archipelagos.
Maga Bo is from Rio. And Maga Bo likes travelling. He goes far South to find music far away from mainstream productions (and yes, I’m a fan of globalized underground mainstream sounds!). If he’s not working as a sound engineer in Rio, he’s travelling, recording, producing and giving production classes in Africa. As a natural result of this, his first album ” Archipelagos” was born and embraced in the family of DJ Ruptures Soot Records. You see, Maga Bo is active. (more…)
